the Gift of ‘Bee’-ing Present

I just had a moment that I wanted to share. Twenty-four hours ago I had a conversation with the assistant at my doctor’s office that sent me into a tail-spin (I’ll tell you up front, it turned out there was no need to worry) . . . aided by watching Wall Street head further and further south. I realize now, […]

A Fine Nine

I have tested nine recipes today. NINE. Granted, these are for additional paragraph recipes to run with the full recipes in an article I’m working on. But still . . . I have NINE dishes of leftovers tucked into both fridges. The good news is, they all turned out really well so I’m actually looking […]

A Bill of Beans

I have been recipe testing all week for a big piece on grains that I’m doing for Prevention, playing around with millet and bulgur and farro and the like. Normally, it’s not the most convenient thing to be recipe testing when people are coming over for dinner—cider-brined turkey isn’t always what people want in spring […]

Reunited

Last week was a trip. Literally, figuratively. Noemi and I headed to the east coast sans Christopher—an adventure in and of itself. For anyone who’s thinking of taking a five hour plane flight with a two-year old on their own, I’d advise you wait until they can play Scrabble or Othello or something to kill the […]

A Secret Celebration

Word’s out. My hub turned the big 4–5 last Friday. I went covert and planned a surprise party for him . . . of sorts. Friends came by to say hi (purportedly) and played the perfect part of “no, no, we couldn’t stay. It’s your birthday!” while I discreetly snuck back to our room to gussy up. I came […]

A Fun One

I got an e-mail today from a friend and fellow Clos du Bois buddy with some gorgeous harvest shots. It was perfect timing, since I’ve been chained to my computer screen all week (two book projects popping at the same time will do that to you! . . . I hope to have good news […]

Grape Food

Yes, we are in the middle of crush here in Sonoma County. Yes, trucks hauling bins behind them are clattering up and down the road dropping whole clusters in their wake. Yes, when you walk into The Flying Goat, half of the people there have bags under their eyes and cuticles dyed purple.
But I’m […]

The Last Raise of Rosé

I don’t know about you, but I tend to think of rosé as a warm-weather wine. When the first sultry summer evenings beckon us outside, you can bet I’ll be holding a glass filled with something pink. With the cool weather moving in though, my thoughts have been turning a shade darker. So I was […]

Life’s a Bowl of . . .

Need I say more?
{  End-of-Summer Chopped Caprese  }
1 pound assorted heirloom tomatoes, cut into 1/2–inch cubes
2 ounces fresh mozzarella cheese, cut into 1/2–inch cubes
1/4 cup fresh basil, julienned
3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil (the best you’ve got)
A splash of wine vinegar
Maldon salt and freshly ground black pepper
Toss together tomatoes, mozzarella and basil. Drizzle olive oil and […]

Where do You Hang Out Online?

I realize the title sounds a little pathetic, but I’m curious. I really am. To me, blogs are like having one-on-one conversations with people. You get to read where people are at, swap recipes, and really get to know them. Social networks like Facebook feel to me, on the other hand, more like going to a […]
