Download of the Debut

Whew! So sorry for the radio silence. The last few days have been somewhat grueling—fun, exciting, Untitled-1challenging, but grueling. I’ve been in Birmingham, at Cooking Light HQ, making my television debut with two braising demos, one on FOX news at noon (which you can check out here . . . soon) and one in Tuscaloosa.

One of the things that struck me throughout this whole experience is just how many thoughts are swirling around in our heads at any given moment. And with TV, when you watch the playback, it becomes even more evident. I’ll give you a few examples with this FOX clip:

What You See Me SayUntitled-2
“One of the great things about braising is that it doesn’t have a lot of added fat.”

What I’m Actually Thinking
Crap . . . the oil is SMOKING!

————————————

What You See Me Say
“This is bottom round we’re using here.”

What I’m Actually Thinking
What if I burn the meat on live TV?!Untitled-3

————————————

What You See Me Say
“I’m just going to add the meat to the pan.”

What I’m Actually Thinking
What the heck am I supposed to do with this bowl?

————————————

What You See Me Say
“You want the oil nice and hot so the meat forms a flavorful crust.”Untitled-4

What I’m Actually Thinking
Am I deafening the viewers?

————————————

What You See Me Say
“Caraway is a spice used in goulash.”

What I’m Actually Thinking
Caraway seed? Are you kidding? I practiced for any question—ANY question—about braising and you ask me about caraway seed?

————————————Untitled-6

The whole thing was an incredible learning experience. Between the FOX show on Monday and the next day in Tuscaloosa, when the microphone was giving my chest zzzt zzzt shocks throughout the entire cooking demo, I discovered that the fun—and challenge—of live TV is that you never know what’ll happen!

Stay tuned . . . word is I’ll be doing some spots on the West coast in the future!

  • Caraway seeds? You’re kidding! Sounds like you handled that, and all of it, with aplomb. I can’t wait to see the clip.

  • I can’t watch the video right now, since I am at work, but I wanted to congratulate you on your first tv spot! :) I can’t wait to watch the video of it… any chance you’ll be doing any spots on the East Coast? I’d love to catch one if you do.

  • Congrats! Seems like a lot of fun. Are you the next Food Network Star? Shall I send Guy Fieri an email and let him know he has competition?

    Congrats, again!

  • Okay, I would seriously lose myself if I knew I was being filmed. I can barely sit still for a picture let alone 5 million people watching me. Ahhhhhhhhh!

Scary fun. If you can think one thing and do another you’ll be fine! Your little girl not quite old enough to “get” that Mommy’s on TV?

  • Oh how funny! but congrats on your appearance! You look great in pink! Can’t wait to hear you talk about wine!

  • Okey dokey, gang . . . the clips are up!

Rosemary . . . Christopher actually held Noe up to the monitor and said she giggled and said, “Momma” over and over again. :-)

White on Rice Couple . . . Thanks! Who knew, I never wear pink. I hope to be talking about wine (and food) on TV soon!

This is awesome! When are you coming to Texas?

  • Wow Lia! I take a break from blog-viewing for a few days and look at all the excitement brewing! You did a fabulous job, I don’t know how you did it. My two times in front of a TV camera were horrendous, I had a hard time getting anything cohesive to come out of my mouth.

  • How wonderful! Wasn’t it so much fun?!?!
Fox was great in ATL, too, when I did it.

I’ve missed a lot of info here since I had n’t visited in a while. I’ve just added you to my blogroll ;)

    Congrats, again!
