We have a gorgeous 15–pound heritage turkey in the fridge bathing in a miso rub. We have balsamic braised cipolline onions all set to go. We have a pumpkin mascarpone pie (I’m on a ROLL . . . I think pumpkin is good for me) all ready to slice. “The Eloquent One” and his wife are awaiting us at their house with a pre-feast amuse bouche of fresh-shucked oysters and champagne. Our friends Catherine and Tim and their adorable little James (aka Squiggles) are here from Iowa . . . Catherine has been the angel helping me on I Land Home for nearly three years now and we’ve become good friends—yet just met face-to-face for the first time yesterday. I’ve even semi-composed a post for tomorrow, presaging a look back at our idyllic Thanksgiving.
There’s only one thing wrong.
Christopher and I both have the flu. I’m finally up and about and have shaken the fever, but I’m still only craving things that contain bread and cheese (literally . . . we made this lovely wild greens and broccoli and sausage pasta to welcome our friends last night and I made a toasted cheese sandwich with ketchup for myself). Christopher went south in the middle of the night and hasn’t gotten up yet (it’s 2:00).
I’d say something about not counting chickens before they hatch . . . but I might get queasy at the thought. I sincerely hope to return with a more appealing account later this week (we’ve decided to officially postpone the feast at our house until Saturday). But until then, happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

So . . you never got to eat the oysters and drink the champagne? steph
I so did not! And I’m still a bit bitter about it . . . I haven’t even gotten the details from The Eloquent One yet. Too fresh.
Good luck with that . . .
We had a great meal at my inlaw’s ranch - lots of little kids, my niece and nephew brought their adorable daughters. One, Darcie, crawled all over my son Matt, who is 22. Very cute. My little guy loves his cousin Marah. Isabella competed for his attention though and ordered him to sit by her at the piano as 3 grandkids played the piano. The turkey was the best - very moist - something under the skin did the trick. Roasted winter veggies, including beets, which was delicious. Mashed potatoes and gravy (I had 2 helpings at dinner and another while everyone else ate pie). I made the pies - apple and pumpkin. The bad thing about going to someone’s house for a meal is no leftovers.
